GOD WILL GET YOUR ATTENTION!
April 30, 2009

On April 30, 1986 I was involved in a very serious accident.  While running along Lakeshore Drive in Birmingham, Alabama I was suddenly struck from behind.  I was propelled forward more than 30 feet.  I thought that I had been hit by a car!  I was face down on the shoulder of the road and I knew that I was hurt badly.  I couldn't feel my legs and I had significant pain up and down my spine.  What was happening?

As I lay on the ground, several people stopped to help.  One of the people who stopped was a nurse and she stayed with me until the emergency personnel arrived.  Police arrived on the scene and I finally found out that I had been struck by something that had flown off the back of a truck.  As I lay on the ground, I overheard the policemen describing the object that had hit me in order to record it in their report.  I heard them describe it as a 5 feet by 9 feet sheet of plywood that had been painted green with white stripes.  I was puzzled by this and I asked for one of them to come over to me.  Bottom line -- IT WAS A PING PONG TABLE!  I had been hit by a
flying ping pong table!  What kind of odds would that be?

God went to a major extreme to get my attention.  He does that sometimes!  Sometimes it's a whisper and other times, it's a ping pong table!  I was transported to a nearby hospital where I regained feeling in my legs and was kept there for 17 days.  Later, I was back in the hosptital for surgery and a stay that lasted until the end of June of that year.  My sacrum had been crushed.  I had lost nerves.  I had significant muscle and other soft tissue damage.  Serious rehabilitation was ahead of me.  In my wildest dreams I could not envision running again.

On this 23rd anniversary of that event, I celebrate that I'm able to walk and run.  I celebrate that God used a tragic moment in my life to get my attention.  I celebrate the fact that he did a miracle in my life and now I have been blessed to be a part of the running community through a ministry such as TEAM 413 that was planned and ordained by God Himself!  I praise God that I am able to be a part of something that is so much
bigger than we could ever envision, dream, or imagine.

On the anniversary of this STRANGE event and injury, I usually celebrate by running at the time that the injury occured -- 5:30 PM.  Unfortunately, I'll be on a plane headed for the OC Marathon in California at 5:30 today.  But, I'll be running in my mind and then running the OC Half Marathon on Sunday.  Please pray with me at 5:30 today to thank God for miracles of GRACE.  Pray with me at that time for the way that He gets our attention and then uses us in ways that we would have never comprehended.  Pray with me today that He will be glorified through this gift of a ministry that we call TEAM 413.

Thank you for celebrating God's grace with me on this very special day!
--- and so I run
--- and so I care
--- and so I share
--- and so I celebrate
--- and so I praise His name for His goodness!

ONE MORE BREATH,
ONE MORE STEP,
ONE MORE MILE,
FINISH LINE!

GO ST. LOUIS MARATHON UPDATES
April 18
& 19, 2009

April 19, 2009

GO ST. LOUIS HALF MARATHON is in the books!  Kiki and I finished albeit slow for me! It rained pretty much the entire race.  Thank you for your prayers as we moved along this journey in memory of my Mom.  I know that she was cheering us on from Heaven even though she was also wondering why we didn't have enough sense to get out of the rain!  Wonderful memories filled my mind every step.  God bless all of you!

TEAM 413 was well represented during the race.  Our ministry "ambassadors" were all over the course.  Thanks to all of you who wear our shirts and help spread the good news of Jesus Christ to thousands of people worldwide.  We look forward to hearing your "shirts stories" in the days to come.  Safe travels as you return home.

Tomorrow Kiki and I will run the GO ST. LOUIS HALF MARATHON in memory of my Mom.  One year ago today she went home to be with the Lord.  On that day she ran through the gates of Heaven with her hands held high to the applause of the angels as God welcomed her home - "Well done my good and faithful servant!"  We miss her beyond measure but she will forever linger in my heart and soul as I move forward under His grace.

The Expo was outstanding in many ways.  We met old and new friends --- people from races past --- people from our Facebook Group --- people who just stopped by to talk.  Our prayer is that St. Louis will have a GRACERUNNER Project within the next few months.  We are praying for leadership in that area.  Please look for details in the near future.

Illinois Marathon - An Amazing Event
April 11, 2009

Friday was one of the MOST amazing days in the history of TEAM 413.  On Good Friday I was reminded of the love of our Savior who was sent to die for us and to rise again!  This day was sent straight from the heart of God through His mercy, grace, love, and care!  Jan Seeley, the publisher of Marathon & Beyond Magazine, had invited us to attend the race.  She also asked me to speak at the expo seminar.  The topic --- "Faith on the Run - One More Breath, One More Step, One More Mile, Finishline!"  I followed the duo of Dick Beardsley and Bart Yasso on the Speaker's Series.  This was a defining moment for TEAM 413.

The expo was wonderful and the people of the area accepted us with open arms.  Race day was today and this inaugural event seemed like a well seasoned race.  They just did everything right!  I appreciate so much when things are done in an excellent way for I believe that God is honored in excellence.  So, THANK YOU to all the people of Champaign/Urbana for the hosptality and for a job very well done!

There are many stories that will be written about in GRACERUNNER Journal over the next few days.  So, stay tuned!  As for now, it is time to rest a bit.  Please pray for the thousands of people who we came in contact with at the expo and during the race.  There are some truly amazing stories of grace to be shared this Easter Weekend.

The tomb could not hold Him ---- Jesus Christ is risen!

Under HIS Grace!

FAQ - Time for Answers
April 7, 2009

During the past several months I've been asked numerous times, "How do I get involved with TEAM 413?"  In an attempt to clarify how one can be a part of our ministry, you will begin to see a FAQ --- Frequently Asked Questions --- page added to our website.  We are putting together a list of those questions and it should be up and running in a couple of weeks.

For now, I would like for everyone to know the following:

1.  You do not have to join anything to be a part of TEAM 413.
2.  There are no fees for being involved with our ministry.
3.  You do not have to raise any money to represent TEAM 413.
4.  All we ask is that you wear a TEAM 413 shirt & share your faith on your journey.

Others have asked if we need anything.  My response has been that if individuals choose to raise money or give money to our cause, it is totally up to them.  We know that if only 3,000 people who wear our shirts all over the world gave just $10.00 per month, we would raise $360,000 a year and it would take care of our overall operational budget.  Again, this is not a requirement to be a part of TEAM 413 --- only an answer for people who choose to give.

Some of our folks have chosen to give $1.00 for each mile they run during the year.  This has been their decision and has helped immensely in our fundraising efforts.  And, some just buy a shirt and send an extra donation along with the shirt order.  This additonal contribution is a decision by the individual -- not a requirement of the ministry.

If you have questions regarding how you can be involved, please email Chris Gillespie at chris@team413.org

Thank you so much for all you do in helping us share Jesus Christ with people worldwide.

Under His Grace,

Faith:  Where the Rubber Meets the Road
April 1, 2009

This edition of GRACERUNNER JOURNAL is a story of faith deeper than most of us can comprehend.  Debbie Shelton told me her story a good while ago and I asked her to send me the story of her journey when she felt comfortable doing so.  I received it this week and she admitted that it was very difficult to convert her feelings into words.  Please read her words and listen to her heart.  This story will touch your heart and soul!  God bless you Debbie as you continue to share your faith to others --- You really can do all things through Christ who strengthens you!  ~ Chris Gillespie

We were raised in the Catholic Church.  My parents, my three sisters, and I attended Mass together every week.  When I was in High School, my family stopped attending church together.  Did we stop going to church because of difficulties, or did we start having difficulties because we stopped going to church?

When we graduated from High School, my twin sister, Deddie, and I started college classes in the summer and we got our first jobs.  We didn’t see nearly as much of one another as we’d liked and one thing we did was start meeting at church each Sunday morning.  We’d each drive there and then head to work after Mass.  It was sometimes the only quality time we had together.

She got married and moved to Germany and I went away to school.  Our parents divorced, I moved away to work, she came home and divorced.  She remarried and we lived at least 500 miles apart from then on.  This was back in the days before the internet and when making a long distance phone call was pretty expensive on a tight budget.  We wrote a lot of letters back and forth.

In the late 90’s we took up running.  In 2000 we met in Chicago and ran our first marathon, together.  I didn’t think it was very much fun, in fact I swore I’d never do it again.  But in 2002 I tried it again and this time, it wasn’t so bad.  In the summer of 2003 Deddie and I and our husbands went to running camp at Lake Tahoe.  We met a lot of really sweet and crazy runners.  We learned of a club of people who ran a marathon in every state called the 50 States Marathon Club.  We were pretty crazy ourselves and we thought we’d give it a try.  It was great.  Every month or so Deddie and I would meet somewhere, visit, and run a marathon.  Running literally brought us together.

At one race I found Team 413.  It was based on Philippians verse 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”   We bought the shirts and started wearing them for all of our marathons.  In every race at least two or three people would say things like “I’ve been following you for miles – your shirt inspired me to finish.’ Or ‘that’s my favorite verse, too!’  For us, at the time, we used it for strength to finish the tough mental and physical requirements of finishing a long distance run.

But were these just words or did we really believe them?  Did we live them?

In 2007 we had 12 marathons to go with a schedule planned to finish our 50th State in October at, where else, the Twin Cities marathon in Minnesota.  In January Deddie and I met in Arizona for a marathon and sisters’ weekend.  We had fun, but Deddie wasn’t feeling well.  The next week they found a 9mm tumor on her liver.  That’s about the size of a baseball.  They told her it wasn’t cancer.  We rejoiced.  On February 23 she had surgery to have the tumor removed.  She was found to have stage IV (the final stage) biliary cancer and it was spread extensively throughout her abdomen.  This cancer is very rare, and it was bad, but we kept the faith and believed she would recover.

Our family became Team 413.  My husband got us all shirts and we wore them to both of Deddie’s chemo treatments.  She spent a lot of time in the hospital and when she was there, her Team 413 shirt hung on the wall directly in her line of vision.  We prayed together every day.

In mid-June we were told she didn’t have but a couple of weeks left with us.  I told her that there were so many things I was sorry for that I couldn’t name them all and I asked her to forgive me, she said the same, although I couldn’t think of a single thing she needed my forgiveness for.  We said the words each needed to hear ‘I forgive you.’  We gave a blanket of forgiveness to each other and we told each other to remember how much we loved one another.

It lasted only minutes, but I think that was one of the most important talks we had in her final days.  I can’t tell you what knowing I had her forgiveness has meant to me.  Losing her was so difficult for me.  I feel so guilty.  But I can’t change anything I’ve done in the past.  I can only take the precious gift of her forgiveness and try to do better next time.  We have that same gift from Jesus --- if we just ask for it.   We must seek forgiveness of our sins and try to do better.  When we start to beat ourselves up, we have to remember that He has forgiven us.  He died for our sins.

Looking back, the thing I marvel at the most was how at peace Deddie was.  She knew it was a matter of days, yet she didn’t complain at all.  How I wished that I would have stopped to talk to her about it.  Reflecting on it all, I realize that she showed us so much grace.

She left this world peacefully at 4:20 am on July 8, 2007 with her husband and me holding her hands, one of our younger sisters at her feet, and my husband nearby, as Jesus carried her away.  She set a real example of faith for us all.  We’d seen her live her faith.  She could do all things through Christ who had strengthened her to make her journey home to Him.

The next 15 months or so were filled with such intense pain that I could barely breathe.  I didn’t want to get out of bed, my mind and my soul were in torment, I was crying out to God all the time - I was so lost.  Each day was a struggle, and there were days I’d pull into the garage and think about how easy it would be just to shut the garage door and go to sleep.  I’d call upon the strength of Jesus to turn off the motor and get out of the car.

I’d pretty much stopped running through Deddie’s illness.

Now I had a decision to make – how was I going to live?  Was I really going to follow her example?  I wore a shirt proclaiming that I could do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  I had a lot of people watching me and praying for me.  Was I willing to test that faith and hand this over to God, too?  I had to…I was so weak that I couldn’t do the simplest things for myself.  I was calling upon the Lord for the least of things.  I prayed like I’d never prayed before, I read the Bible, I started listening exclusively to Christian radio,  and I sought out my faith-filled family and friends.

His strength got us through the toughest part of my life.  I needed to show everyone that the writing on the backs of our shirts weren’t just words, but our FAITH.

Getting back to running was very difficult.  We each had 11 States left to go.  My Brother-in-law, a non-runner, told my sister he was going to finish her states.  I thought Deddie would be really disappointed in me if I didn’t finish.  So, we started training.  We made signs to wear on our backs in Deddie’s memory.  I finished my 50th State on September 21, 2008 and my brother-in-law has just three to go.  We’re planning to wrap those up this year.

Now I run for the Glory of God and in Deddie’s memory, using the time for prayer and praise.

I thought that running marathons was hard, but I’m living through something I never believed I could – my life without my twin, sister, best friend, confidant, running partner, and role model for living the faith.  He never said it would be easy, but through His Grace, God is showing me that He is always here.  I hope that by sharing my faith story, you will learn that WE can do all things through Christ who strengthens US.  Jesus, I trust in YOU!  God bless you all.
